CAF and FUFA Launch Safe Stadium Initiative Training Programme at Mandela National Stadium

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), in collaboration with the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), has organized the Safe Stadium Initiative Training Programme, a landmark three-day event scheduled from November 19th to 21st, 2024, at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. This initiative seeks to standardize safety and security protocols across CAF Member Associations, ensuring safer match-day experiences for fans and stakeholders alike.

The training programme aims to align safety and security operations within Uganda and the wider CAF community with established international guidelines. By implementing FIFA and CAF safety standards, the programme intends to:

Boost fan confidence by creating a safe and secure match-day environment.

Cultivate a culture of professionalism in football stadium management.

Enhance operational readiness through practical simulations, risk assessments, and access control protocols.

Expert Guidance from CAF and FIFA

The workshop is led by distinguished safety and security experts from CAF and FIFA, including:

Dr. Christian Emeruwa – CAF Head of Safety and Security.

Ababacar Sene – CAF Security Department.

Khakame Alan Chikanimr – CAF Safety and Security Instructor.

Katherina Steinberg – FIFA Safety and Security Event Operations Specialist.

Their expertise ensures the programme meets global safety benchmarks while addressing the unique challenges faced by African stadiums.

The training programme has drawn participants from a diverse pool of stakeholders, including FUFA members, local security agencies, and stadium management teams. Representatives from various Uganda Premier League (UPL) clubs and regional teams will also attend.

The workshop will feature a mix of theoretical and practical activities, including:

Simulations of emergency scenarios to test and improve response plans.

Risk assessment drills for proactive incident management.

Access control exercises to manage stadium entry and prevent unauthorized access.

These exercises are tailored to address real-world challenges faced by stadium security teams in Uganda and across Africa.

By prioritizing safety and professionalism, the initiative seeks to enhance the overall match-day experience for fans. Improved security measures not only foster trust but also encourage higher attendance at football events, contributing to the sport's growth.

The programme will conclude with a closing ceremony, during which participants will be awarded certificates of completion. This formal recognition underscores their commitment to upholding safety and security standards in Ugandan football.

The Safe Stadium Initiative Training Programme represents a significant step toward making football safer and more enjoyable for all. FUFA’s proactive approach, supported by CAF and FIFA, reflects Uganda’s dedication to fostering a secure environment for players, fans, and stakeholders.
