Fourteen years ago, South Sudan did not exist as an independent nation. Today, the world’s youngest country has etched its name in the annals of Olympic history with a monumental victory in men’s basketball at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Bright Stars, as the team is known, marked their first win in Olympic history by defeating Puerto Rico 90-79 on Sunday, July 28th. This stellar performance was spearheaded by Carlik Jones, who led the team with 19 points, showcasing South Sudan’s arrival on the global stage in style.
A Rapid Rise to Prominence
The African nation entered the Games with minimal expectations, having only played their first official game seven years ago. However, their narrow 101-100 loss to the United States in a pre-Olympic warmup game caught the world’s attention and hinted at their potential.
Despite being underestimated and disregarded for much of their journey, South Sudan now boasts an Olympic victory, proving that they are a force to be reckoned with. Since becoming a full member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2015, South Sudan has experienced a remarkable upward trajectory. Their journey began with their debut tournament at the 2021 AfroBasket, followed by a standout performance at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, where they finished as the top African team.
The Path to Paris 2024
Their success at the FIBA World Cup secured their spot at Paris 2024. In an exciting Group C, South Sudan has already defeated Puerto Rico and is set to face the United States on July 31st, followed by a match against Nikola Jokic and Serbia on August 3rd. Although the challenges ahead are formidable, the Bright Stars have demonstrated that they should never be underestimated.
Luol Deng: The Architect of Success
At the heart of South Sudan’s basketball success is Luol Deng, a two-time NBA All-Star and Team GB Olympian at London 2012. Deng has played a pivotal role in developing the nation’s sporting infrastructure and nurturing the next generation of players. Serving as the President of the South Sudan Basketball Federation since 2019, Deng also acts as the team’s assistant coach, working alongside head coach Royal Ivey.
Rising Stars and National Pride
One of Deng’s standout prodigies is 17-year-old Khaman Maluach, a 7ft 2in Center from Duke University. Maluach attended Deng’s basketball camp in Uganda in 2019, and under Deng’s mentorship, he has become a key player for the national team. Alongside Maluach, the squad features talents like former NBA player Wenyen Gabriel, blending youth and experience to form a formidable team.
A Symbol of National Pride
For South Sudan, this team represents more than just basketball. It embodies national pride and the spirit of resilience for the world’s youngest nation. Their journey from the FIBA World Cup to the Olympic Games in Paris has been nothing short of inspirational, and their story is only beginning. As they prepare to face powerhouse teams like the USA and Serbia, South Sudan stands tall as the ultimate underdog, ready to make history.
Looking Forward
As South Sudan gears up to take on the USA on July 31st, the world will be watching. A victory would not only solidify their place in Olympic history but also symbolize the incredible progress of a nation that has overcome immense challenges. The Bright Stars are quietly confident in their chances of securing their first Olympic medal, and their journey serves as a testament to the power of determination and national pride.
