Defence Minister pays tribute on SPLA Day

Honoring SPLA Day: General Chol Thon Balok's Tribute to South Sudan's Heroes

By John Kusolo

As South Sudan commemorates the 16th of May, known as SPLA Day, it is a moment for reflection and gratitude. This day marks the founding of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in 1983, a significant milestone in the country's journey towards freedom and independence. General Chol Thon Balok, the current Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister and a former governor of Upper Nile State, offers a poignant recollection of this historic day and the sacrifices made by countless heroes.

The Genesis of the SPLA

On May 16, 1983, the SPLA was officially established, igniting a protracted and challenging struggle against the Sudanese government led by President Gaafar Nimeiry. Nimeiry's regime sought to impose Islamic law on the predominantly Christian and animist population of Southern Sudan, triggering widespread resistance. The SPLA, under the political wing of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), became the vanguard of this resistance, fighting for the rights and freedoms of the Southern Sudanese people.

The Long Struggle for Independence

The conflict, often referred to as the Second Sudanese Civil War, lasted for 21 grueling years. It was a period marked by immense hardship, loss, and sacrifice. The war claimed the lives of countless civilians and soldiers, causing widespread devastation and suffering. Yet, it was also a time that showcased the extraordinary courage and resilience of the South Sudanese people.

General Chol Thon Balok, a loyal general and key figure in the SPLA, recalls the relentless efforts of the SPLM/A leaders who fought tirelessly against the Sudanese government's oppressive policies. Despite facing overwhelming odds, they remained steadfast in their commitment to achieving freedom and self-determination for their people.

Celebrating the Legacy of Our Heroes

Today, as we celebrate SPLA Day, we honor the bravery and sacrifices of our heroes who gave their all for the dream of an independent South Sudan. General Balok emphasizes that this day is not just a commemoration but also a celebration of the indomitable spirit and unwavering determination of those who fought for our freedom.

"On this day, we remember the courage of our heroes who faced insurmountable challenges and paid the ultimate price for our freedom," says General Balok. "Their sacrifices will never be forgotten, and their legacy will continue to inspire us for generations to come."

A Message to the Nation

General Balok's message extends to all South Sudanese, urging them to reflect on the significance of SPLA Day and to honor the memory of those who fought bravely for their nation's independence. He particularly extends his heartfelt gratitude to the first President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, who played a crucial role in the struggle for liberation.

"HAPPY 16TH MAY TO OUR FIRST PRESIDENT SALVA KIIR MAYARDIT," General Balok exclaims, acknowledging President Kiir's pivotal role in leading the SPLM/A to victory and steering the nation towards independence.

Moving Forward

As South Sudan moves forward, the legacy of the SPLA and the sacrifices of its heroes serve as a guiding light. General Balok calls on all South Sudanese to draw strength from their history, to remain united, and to continue striving towards a future of peace, prosperity, and justice.

SPLA Day is a reminder of the resilience and bravery that define the South Sudanese spirit. It is a day to celebrate the achievements of the past and to look forward with hope and determination. As we honor the memory of our heroes, we reaffirm our commitment to building a strong, independent, and prosperous South Sudan.

In the words of General Chol Thon Balok, "Their sacrifices will never be forgotten, and their legacy will continue to inspire us. Let us celebrate this day with pride and gratitude for the freedom and independence we now enjoy."

HAPPY 16TH MAY TO ALL SOUTH SUDANESE!
