Director General Fred Bamwesigye Leads Successful Emergency Exercise at Entebbe International Airport

By John Kusolo

Entebbe International Airport, under the leadership of Director General Fred Bamwesigye, has successfully

conducted a critical emergency exercise to evaluate the airport's readiness in the event of a disaster. The drill, simulating an aircraft crash shortly after takeoff with an engine fire on the runway, provided a realistic scenario to test the efficacy of emergency protocols and the coordination of multiple response agencies.

The exercise presupposed a dire situation where some passengers tragically lost their lives and several others sustained critical injuries. This simulated catastrophe activated a comprehensive emergency response involving the airport's fire-fighting team and various rescue agencies. Their primary objective was to save lives, manage the crisis, and restore normalcy as swiftly as possible.

Fred Bamwesigye emphasized the importance of such exercises, stating, "Conducting these drills is crucial for ensuring that our emergency response plans are robust and effective. The safety and security of passengers and staff are our utmost priorities. By testing our systems in simulated real-life scenarios, we can identify strengths and areas for improvement, ensuring that we are prepared for any eventuality."

Key components of the exercise included evaluating emergency plans and procedures, assessing the communication framework, measuring response times, and testing the coordination capabilities among different stakeholders. The involvement of various agencies highlighted the collaborative effort required to handle emergencies efficiently.

"We are immensely grateful to our stakeholders for their participation and support in this exercise," Bamwesigye added. "Their involvement is vital to the success of our emergency preparedness programs. This exercise not only meets the mandatory requirements set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) but also demonstrates our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety at Entebbe International Airport."

The successful conclusion of the exercise underscores the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority's dedication to continuous improvement and adherence to international safety regulations. Fred Bamwesigye and his team at the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority are committed to ensuring that Entebbe International Airport remains a safe and secure gateway for all travelers, ready to respond effectively to any emergency situation.
