In a historic ceremony held at Makerere University on October 2, 2024, Dr. Crispus Walter Kiyonga was officially installed as the university’s 7th Chancellor by Uganda's President, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. This landmark event coincided with the commissioning of the newly reconstructed Ivory Tower, the university's iconic Main Building, which had been destroyed by a devastating fire in September 2020. The restoration of the Ivory Tower, completed in 2024, marks a significant milestone in the university’s journey towards reclaiming its place as a leading institution of higher learning in Africa.
*A New Chapter for Makerere University*
Dr. Kiyonga, a seasoned politician and academic, was appointed Chancellor on August 31, 2024, by President Museveni, following the retirement of Prof. Ezra Suruma, who served in the role for eight years. His installation ushers in a new era for Makerere University, which has historically been at the forefront of academic and research excellence in Uganda and across the continent. Dr. Kiyonga's leadership is expected to build on the legacy left by Prof. Suruma, focusing on addressing key challenges and further elevating the institution’s reputation globally.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Kiyonga expressed deep gratitude to President Museveni and the First Lady, Hon. Janet Museveni, for their confidence in his leadership. He pledged to collaborate closely with Makerere’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, and other key stakeholders to better understand the pressing issues facing the university and to find lasting solutions.
"We want to make Makerere University one that produces national and international assets, and the only way of doing that is by involving all stakeholders in decision-making," Dr. Kiyonga said. "We want students to be more involved in the decision-making of the university."
*Prioritizing Practical Learning and Innovation*
Dr. Kiyonga outlined his vision to expand the university’s capacity for practical learning and research. He proposed the construction of state-of-the-art laboratories and practical study centers on unused university land to enhance hands-on learning experiences for students. "Laboratories and study centers should be constructed on idle university land to ensure that students get practical study of what they are learning. This will help them to liberate and develop Africa, which is one of the major goals of the university," he stated.
His focus on practical education aligns with Makerere's broader mission of producing graduates equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to drive innovation and development in Uganda and the wider African continent.
*Commissioning of the Ivory Tower and Other Iconic Structures*
The installation ceremony of Dr. Kiyonga was held in conjunction with the reopening of Makerere University’s Main Building, commonly referred to as the Ivory Tower. This historic structure, which houses the university’s central administration offices, was gutted by a fire on September 20, 2020. The fire, which destroyed much of the building’s upper floors, was a significant loss to the university community, as the Ivory Tower is one of Makerere's most recognizable landmarks.
The restoration of the building began in March 2022 and was completed in 2024, faithfully preserving its original design. President Museveni, in his speech, commended the efforts of all those involved in the reconstruction process, emphasizing the symbolic importance of the Ivory Tower to Makerere University’s legacy. He also reiterated the government's commitment to supporting the university in its academic and infrastructural development.
“The restoration of the Ivory Tower is not just about rebuilding a structure, but it is also about reviving the spirit of excellence and resilience that Makerere University represents,” President Museveni said. "Makerere has been a pillar of knowledge, and we will continue to support it in becoming a global center for academic excellence."
*A New Beginning for Makerere*
The reopening of the Ivory Tower is a key part of broader efforts to enhance Makerere University’s infrastructure. The restoration of other key buildings and facilities on campus is also underway, as the institution positions itself as a hub of innovation, research, and academic leadership in Africa.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe reflected on the dual significance of the day’s events, noting that the installation of a new Chancellor and the reopening of the Ivory Tower represent a fresh start for the university. "Your Excellency, today is a special day in the history of Makerere, for it is the day the Lord has made for the installation of our new Chancellor, Hon. Dr. Crispus Kiyonga. What a blessing it is that on the day we re-open our iconic Main Building, we also install our new Chancellor," Prof. Nawangwe remarked.
*Dr. Kiyonga's Leadership and Legacy*
Dr. Kiyonga becomes the fourth non-head of state to hold the prestigious position of Chancellor at Makerere University. His predecessors include distinguished individuals such as Rt. Hon. Prof. Apollo Robin Nsibambi, Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera, and most recently, Prof. Ezra Suruma. With a wealth of experience in both public service and academia, Dr. Kiyonga’s leadership is expected to bring a renewed focus on research, practical education, and addressing the socio-economic challenges of Uganda and the African continent.
Dr. Kiyonga has served Uganda in various capacities over the years, including as a former Minister of Health, Minister of Defence, and Member of Parliament. His installation as Chancellor at Makerere University marks the beginning of another chapter in his long and illustrious career dedicated to public service and development.
As Makerere University moves forward under his leadership, the institution remains committed to its mission of producing graduates who are not only academically excellent but also capable of transforming societies through innovation, research, and practical solutions.
The installation of Dr. Crispus Kiyonga as Makerere University’s 7th Chancellor, alongside the reopening of the iconic Ivory Tower, marks a significant moment in the university’s storied history. With a focus on strengthening stakeholder engagement, expanding practical learning opportunities, and preserving the university's rich heritage, Dr. Kiyonga’s leadership promises to guide Makerere University into a new era of excellence and global recognition. The commissioning of the restored Ivory Tower stands as a symbol of resilience and hope for the future of Uganda’s premier institution of higher learning.
