In a significant move to bolster the longstanding relationship between Uganda and China, Lieutenant General James Mugira, the Managing Director of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), hosted a high-level delegation from the China Changsha Municipal People's Government. The meeting took place at the NEC offices in Bugolobi, Kampala.
The Chinese delegation was led by Mr. Peng Hausong, the Executive Deputy Mayor of the Municipal People’s Government. He was accompanied by Mr. Cheng Ping, the Director of the Municipal Bureau of Commerce, and senior officials from HBP, a leading company in the oil and gas industry. The HBP team was headed by their Director and General Manager, Mr. Li Songbai.
General Mugira welcomed the delegation, emphasizing the deep and cordial relations between Uganda and China, which date back to 18th October 1962, shortly after Uganda gained independence. He highlighted the extensive investment by Chinese companies in Uganda across various sectors such as mining, manufacturing, and infrastructure development, including power, roads, and railways.
"China was among the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Uganda," noted General Mugira, underscoring the historical and strategic importance of this partnership. He praised the contributions of Chinese enterprises to Uganda's development, particularly in enhancing the country's infrastructure.
Mr. Peng Hausong expressed gratitude for the warm reception and hospitality extended to his delegation. He stated that the primary purpose of their visit was to reinforce the existing collaboration and explore new opportunities for cooperation. One of the key areas of interest discussed was municipal water treatment, with Mr. Peng indicating China’s readiness to provide financial support for such projects.
The meeting delved into potential areas of further collaboration, focusing on strengthening ties in sectors where Chinese companies have already established a presence and exploring new avenues for joint ventures. The delegation expressed particular interest in expanding their involvement in oil waste management, an area where HBP is already partnering with Luwero Industries in Kikube District.
Maj Gen Sabiti Muzeyi, the General Manager of Luwero Industries, and Mr. Stanley Ndyabahika, the Project Manager for Oil Waste Management, were also present at the meeting. Their presence underscored the ongoing successful partnership between Luwero Industries and HBP, which has been pivotal in managing oil waste in Kikube District.
In addition to Maj Gen Muzeyi and Mr. Ndyabahika, other senior NEC managers attended the meeting, contributing to the discussions on future collaboration and potential projects. The dialogue highlighted mutual benefits and the shared commitment to sustainable development and economic growth.
The visit by the Chinese delegation and the fruitful discussions held signify a continued strong bond between Uganda and China. The collaboration promises to bring about significant advancements in various sectors, benefiting both nations and paving the way for future joint initiatives.
This meeting marks another step in the robust Uganda-China partnership, with both sides eager to explore and implement projects that will drive progress and prosperity.
