On Friday, Gogonyo County in the Pallisa District witnessed a significant boost to youth empowerment as the area’s Member of Parliament, Hon. Derrick Orone, allocated 60 million UGX in seed capital to support local youth initiatives. This initiative reflects Orone’s ongoing commitment to uplift various groups within his constituency, particularly youth, women, and the disabled.
Support for Bodaboda Operators
Before distributing the substantial seed capital, Orone took the opportunity to provide 10 million UGX specifically for the 400 bodaboda operators in the county. This targeted support aims to enhance their operations, enabling them to invest in spare parts and other essential resources for their businesses. Ezekiel Chedikol, the representative of the Gogonyo County Bodaboda Association, expressed gratitude to Orone for this initiative, highlighting its importance in improving the livelihoods of the bodaboda community.
Chedikol also pointed out an often-overlooked benefit: the provision of reflector aprons. These safety gear items are crucial for road safety, especially for bodaboda operators navigating the busy roads of Uganda. This initiative demonstrates Orone’s awareness of the broader implications of supporting local businesses, ensuring not just economic growth but also enhanced safety.
Orone’s distribution of funds is part of a broader commitment to support various community segments, including women, the elderly, and disabled persons. He emphasized the importance of uplifting these groups through collective support, stating, “It is not possible for a member of parliament at this time when only one year is left to continue with pledges unless he is certain of his ground. Most colleagues are now saving money for campaigns.” This remark underscores Orone’s dedication to fulfilling his promises to the people of Gogonyo, even as the political landscape prepares for the upcoming 2026 elections.
When asked about potential challengers in the 2026 elections, Orone expressed confidence, citing that he had accomplished 90% of his personal manifesto. He highlighted his successful lobbying for the establishment of two seed secondary schools, a feat he claims surpasses the efforts of his colleagues in Pallisa. Orone proudly declared, “I am one of the most lucky MPs because I took oath twice in one term. They call me Gogonyo as well as Palisa Bambata because nobody can withstand my political spiral thunder.” His confidence suggests that he believes his track record and community engagement will serve as a solid foundation for his re-election campaign.
Broader Support for Farmers and the Community
In addition to youth and bodaboda support, Orone is committed to addressing the needs of farmers in his constituency. He has assured that a substantial number of farmers will receive assistance, with the first consignment of 2,000 bags already distributed. This holistic approach to community development is evident in his collaboration with Vice President Jessica Alupo, who has pledged additional support of 10,000 bags. Orone expressed his readiness to step in and fulfill this promise if necessary, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his constituents.
During the event, Apulansi Imesa, the LC1 chairperson of Agule village in Gogonyo sub-county, commended the progress of women’s savings and credit cooperatives (SACCOs) in the area. This acknowledgment of women’s empowerment is an essential component of Orone’s broader strategy, as he works to ensure that all segments of the community benefit from development initiatives.
Hon. Derrick Orone's proactive approach to community support, particularly for youth, women, and the disabled, exemplifies a dedicated public servant focused on uplifting his constituents. As he navigates the complexities of Ugandan politics, his commitment to delivering on promises and fostering community development positions him as a prominent figure in the Gogonyo County landscape. As the 2026 elections approach, Orone’s achievements and ongoing initiatives will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping his political future and the lives of those he represents.
