Kyagalanyi Coffee Export Volumes Rise: MD Jeremy Mpalampa on Maintaining Top Arabica Coffee Exporter Status

By John Kusolo

In a year marked by significant milestones, Kyagalanyi Coffee Limited, Uganda's leading coffee exporter, has once again solidified its reputation as the top Arabica coffee exporter in the country. The company's consistent commitment to quality, sustainability, and collaboration with farming communities has resulted in an impressive rise in export volumes, a feat that was recognized by the Ugandan Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) in October 2023.

A Year of Recognition and Achievement

Kyagalanyi Coffee Ltd, a key player in Uganda’s coffee industry since its establishment in 1992, was recently named the ‘Best Arabica Exporter of the Year’ by the UCDA. This prestigious accolade is a testament to the company's success in shipping the largest volume of Arabica coffee from Uganda during the 2022-23 crop year. The UCDA, a government agency founded in 1991, plays a pivotal role in promoting and regulating the quality of coffee across the entire value chain in Uganda, making this recognition particularly significant.

Jeremy Mpalampa, the Managing Director of Kyagalanyi Coffee, expressed his pride in the company’s achievements. "Being recognized as the top Arabica coffee exporter of the year fills us with immense pride," said Mpalampa. "Our unwavering commitment revolves around sourcing the finest Arabica coffees, working hand in hand with farmers, and incorporating a sustainable approach throughout the entire supply chain."

The Foundation of Success: Quality and Sustainability

Kyagalanyi Coffee's success can be attributed to its robust foundation built on quality and sustainability. The company sources its Arabica coffee from key regions in Uganda, including Mount Elgon, the Rwenzori Mountains, and Greater Masaka. These regions are renowned for producing high-quality coffee, and Kyagalanyi has leveraged this to build a strong export business.

The company’s state-of-the-art processing facilities, located in the Kampala Industrial Business Park at Namanve, Kampala, and in Mbale, are central to its operations. The Mbale facility, in particular, serves as a hub for washed Arabicas, further enhancing the quality of the coffee processed by Kyagalanyi. In addition to these facilities, the company operates several eco-washing stations across Mount Elgon and in other strategic locations, ensuring that the coffee it processes meets the highest standards.

Kyagalanyi’s commitment to sustainability is also evident in its various initiatives aimed at supporting farming households. These initiatives focus on increasing production, improving coffee quality, and addressing important issues such as carbon footprint reduction, gender equality, and youth engagement in the coffee sector. The company’s efforts in these areas have not only improved the livelihoods of coffee farmers but have also contributed to the overall sustainability of the coffee industry in Uganda.

The Role of the Volcafe Coffee Group

As a part of the Volcafe coffee group, the coffee division of ED&F Man, Kyagalanyi Coffee benefits from the global reach and resources of one of the world’s leading coffee trading companies. This affiliation has allowed Kyagalanyi to maintain its competitive edge in the global market while adhering to the highest standards of quality and sustainability.

Volcafe’s global network has enabled Kyagalanyi to access new markets and expand its customer base, further driving the growth in export volumes. The company’s ability to consistently deliver high-quality Arabica coffee to international buyers has played a crucial role in its success as Uganda’s top Arabica coffee exporter.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Kyagalanyi Coffee

The future looks bright for Kyagalanyi Coffee as it continues to build on its successes. With a strong focus on quality, sustainability, and collaboration with farming communities, the company is well-positioned to maintain its leadership in Uganda’s coffee industry.

Mpalampa is optimistic about the future, stating, "We will continue to innovate and invest in our operations to ensure that we remain at the forefront of the coffee industry in Uganda. Our goal is to not only increase export volumes but also to enhance the quality and sustainability of the coffee we produce."

Kyagalanyi Coffee Limited’s rise in export volumes and its continued recognition as Uganda’s top Arabica coffee exporter underscore the company’s dedication to excellence. With a solid foundation and a clear vision for the future, Kyagalanyi Coffee is set to remain a dominant force in the global coffee industry.
