Minister Aisha Sekindi Commissions Buikwe Water Supply and Sanitation System

By John Kusolo*

The Minister of State for Water, Hon. Aisha Sekindi, presided over the official commissioning of the Buikwe Water Supply and Sanitation System. The system, which promises to vastly improve water supply in Buikwe Town, Lugazi, and Kiyindi, was implemented by the Ministry of Water and Environment as part of the Strategic Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Project. This project was co-financed by the Government of Uganda and the African Development Bank (AfDB), demonstrating a strong partnership in boosting access to clean water in underserved areas.

The construction of the water system was entrusted to China Railway No.10 Engineering Company Ltd, which completed the works under the supervision of Egis Eau, in association with Alliance Consultants Ltd. As part of Uganda's broader water and sanitation goals, the system is expected to serve over 129,100 people by the ultimate year of 2040, ensuring long-term sustainability and better living conditions for the region.

During the commissioning ceremony, Hon. Sekindi expressed the government’s dedication to increasing access to clean water for all Ugandans, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. She highlighted the critical role of clean water in fostering community health, reducing waterborne diseases, and promoting socio-economic development. "This project is a step toward achieving our national vision of ensuring that every Ugandan has access to clean and safe water. It is not only about water; it is about improving livelihoods, enhancing hygiene, and supporting local economies," she stated.

The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to investing in critical infrastructure to meet the growing demands of Uganda’s rapidly expanding population. "By 2040, this system will serve nearly 130,000 people, contributing significantly to Uganda’s efforts to achieve universal access to clean water," she added.

The Buikwe Water Supply and Sanitation System is one of several projects under the Strategic Towns Water Supply and Sanitation initiative, aimed at improving water supply and sanitation services in fast-growing urban centers across the country. Minister Sekindi acknowledged the joint effort between the Government of Uganda and the AfDB in realizing this critical infrastructure. She also commended the local leadership and communities for their cooperation and support during the project’s implementation phase.

The system, which includes the construction of water supply infrastructure and sanitation facilities, was designed with sustainability in mind. After completion, it was officially handed over to the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), which will be responsible for its operation and maintenance. This move ensures that the project will be efficiently managed and maintained for future generations.

Hon. Mutasingwa Diana Kagyenyi’s Involvement

The event was graced by several key stakeholders, including Hon. Mutasingwa Diana Kagyenyi, the Woman Member of Parliament for Buikwe District and also Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President. In her remarks, Hon. Mutasingwa lauded the Ministry of Water and Environment for prioritizing Buikwe in its infrastructure development plans. She emphasized the importance of clean water access for the overall development of the district and encouraged the community to take advantage of this essential service to improve their health and economic productivity.

The commissioning was well attended by a diverse group of officials, including political leaders, Ministry of Water and Environment officials, NWSC representatives, contractors, consultants, community beneficiaries, and members of the media. This collective effort from all parties underscored the importance of collaboration in achieving Uganda’s water and sanitation goals.

Officials from NWSC reiterated their commitment to maintaining and operating the Buikwe Water Supply and Sanitation System efficiently. They assured the public that the system would be regularly monitored to ensure uninterrupted water supply and sanitation services, fostering a healthier living environment for the local population.

With this new water supply system, Buikwe District is set to experience a significant transformation. Reliable access to clean water will not only reduce the burden of waterborne diseases but also enhance agricultural productivity, support small businesses, and improve the overall quality of life. The sanitation facilities provided will further promote hygiene and environmental sustainability, contributing to the district’s long-term development.

Minister Aisha Sekindi’s commissioning of the Buikwe Water Supply and Sanitation System marks a critical milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to improve water access across Uganda. With this infrastructure now in place, Buikwe’s future looks promising, as it moves towards becoming a healthier, more prosperous community. The event underscored the importance of continued investments in water and sanitation as Uganda works towards achieving its Vision 2040 goals.
