On the 23rd of July 2024, Hon. Jacob Oboth-Oboth, the Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs, presided over the inauguration of the new Board of Directors for the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) at its headquarters in Bugolobi, Kampala. This significant event marked a pivotal moment for NEC, the commercial arm of the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs/Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF), tasked with producing goods and services beneficial to both the Defence Forces and the general public through its subsidiaries and joint ventures.
In his address, Minister Oboth-Oboth underscored the importance of accountability and strategic planning in fostering both business prosperity and institutional credibility. He charged the newly constituted Board with prioritizing NEC's prosperity, growth, and long-term sustainability while remaining dedicated to fulfilling its statutory responsibilities. "I expect total accountability, as it fosters acceptance and respectability among investors for the Enterprise," remarked Hon. Oboth-Oboth, emphasizing the dual imperative of growth and transparency in corporate governance.
Gen (Rtd) Joram Mugume, appointed as the new Chairman of the Board, commended the outgoing members for their diligence and contribution to NEC's performance, which saw notable achievements under their tenure. He expressed optimism about steering NEC to greater heights alongside the diverse expertise of the newly inaugurated Board members.
Lt Gen James Mugira, the Managing Director of NEC, echoed these sentiments, expressing confidence in the Board's ability to guide the Corporation towards realizing its mandate in support of UPDF's goals and Uganda's national development agenda. "The management looks forward to working closely with the board to take NEC to greater heights," stated Lt Gen Mugira, highlighting the collaborative effort envisioned between management and the Board.
The composition of the newly inaugurated Board reflects a blend of seasoned professionals and experts, including Prof. Charles Kwesiga, Lt Gen Charles Otema Awany, Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, Lt Gen Charles Okidi, Maj Gen Jack Bakasumba, Maj Gen David Mugisha, Mr. Francis Kahirita Ngabirano, Eng. Isaac Musasizi, Dr. Anna Rose Ademun Okurut, Dr. Joshua Mutambi, and Mr. Hannington Ashaba. Each member brings unique skills and experiences that are expected to enrich NEC's strategic planning and operational effectiveness.
As NEC embarks on this new chapter under the leadership of Gen (Rtd) Joram Mugume and the guidance of the Board, the Corporation is poised to reinforce its role in advancing national security interests while contributing to Uganda's socio-economic development.
The inauguration ceremony symbolized a commitment to excellence, accountability, and forward-thinking leadership within NEC, setting a strong foundation for future growth and impact.
The Minister's charge for accountability and strategic growth, coupled with the Board's collective expertise and vision, positions NEC to navigate challenges and seize opportunities in advancing its mission for the benefit of the Defence Forces and the nation at large.
