National Water and Sewerage Corporation Completes Re-Surveying of Encroachers Along Kinawataka Sewer Line
By John Kusolo
The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has successfully concluded a crucial re-surveying and documentation exercise targeting encroachers along the Kinawataka sewer line stretch. This comprehensive operation, covering a total of 3.1 kilometres, identified 95 encroachers who had settled on the gazetted land designated for the sewer line. Among the encroachers were various structures, including a church, a primary school, and a local nightclub.
The collaborative effort involved a dedicated team of NWSC officials, Uganda Police forces, surveyors, and community leaders. The re-surveying initiative is part of NWSC's broader strategy to protect vital infrastructure and ensure public safety. Encroachments on sewer lines not only pose risks to the infrastructure but also threaten public health and environmental safety.
Over several weeks, the team meticulously worked to map out and document the encroachments. Their efforts were aimed at creating a clear and accurate record of all unauthorized structures along the sewer line. The involvement of community leaders was crucial in ensuring that the exercise was conducted transparently and that local residents were kept informed.
The identification of the 95 encroachers marks a significant milestone for NWSC. The encroachments, comprising various buildings and establishments, highlight the challenges faced in urban planning and infrastructure protection. The presence of a church, a primary school, and a nightclub among the encroachers underscores the complexity of the issue, as these are essential community services and businesses that have inadvertently settled on restricted land.
Following the documentation, NWSC is engaging with the identified encroachers to negotiate their immediate vacation of the sewer line corridor. This engagement is crucial to ensuring that the evictions are conducted humanely and in accordance with legal procedures. NWSC aims to provide the encroachers with sufficient notice and support to relocate, minimizing disruptions to their lives and businesses.
The re-surveying and subsequent engagement with encroachers are part of NWSC's commitment to safeguarding its infrastructure. By clearing the sewer line of unauthorized structures, NWSC can carry out maintenance and upgrades more effectively, ensuring the efficient functioning of the sewer system. This is vital for preventing blockages, leaks, and potential public health hazards.
The completion of the re-surveying exercise is a testament to NWSC's dedication to protecting its assets and the communities it serves. The Kinawataka sewer line is a critical component of Kampala's sanitation infrastructure, and its protection is essential for the city's overall health and well-being.
NWSC's proactive approach in addressing encroachments sets a precedent for similar initiatives across Uganda. It highlights the importance of collaboration between government agencies, local authorities, and communities in tackling urban infrastructure challenges.
The successful re-surveying of the Kinawataka sewer line encroachments is a significant achievement for NWSC. It not only demonstrates the organization's commitment to infrastructure protection and public safety but also serves as a call to action for other regions facing similar challenges. By engaging with encroachers and ensuring the integrity of its sewer lines, NWSC is taking vital steps towards creating a safer and more sustainable urban environment.
