As the 50th edition of the Stanbic Bank Uganda Cup approaches, excitement is reaching fever pitch ahead of the highly anticipated final between NEC FC and Kitara FC. The match is scheduled for Saturday, May 25, 2024, at the historic Mutesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku. This year's final promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams showcasing remarkable determination and skill throughout the tournament.
Road to the Final
Both NEC FC and Kitara FC have overcome formidable challenges to reach the final. Brian Ssenyondo, the coach of Kitara FC, expressed immense pride in his team's journey: "Overcoming stiff competition from powerhouse teams like SC Villa FC and Vipers FC has been a valuable learning experience for us. By successfully navigating these challenging matches, we have emerged stronger and more resilient, making us well-prepared and confident as we head into the final."
Kitara FC's Determination
Kitara FC's forward, Denis Omedi, emphasized the team's unity and collective mindset as key factors driving their success. "I am thrilled to see our team’s unity and mindset. Our collective determination and winning mentality are palpable, and it is clear that we are all driven to emerge victorious in the final," he said.
NEC FC's Composure and Experience
NEC FC, on the other hand, is making its maiden appearance in the final. Despite this, the team remains remarkably calm and composed, thanks in large part to the presence of seasoned players. Captain Marvin Kavuma highlighted the impact of these experienced players: "While this is our maiden appearance at the final, we are feeling remarkably calm and composed due to the presence of experienced players who have been in such situations and also won the Cup. Their wealth of experience and winning mentality has eliminated any pressure, allowing us to approach the final with confidence."
Preparations and Recovery
NEC FC's coach, Hussein Mbalangu, acknowledged the fatigue that had set in after a long season but remained optimistic about his team's chances. "Although the team appeared fatigued due to the long season, we have had a week to recover, and hopefully, by Saturday, the players will have rested enough and recovered. We also know the magnitude of the game; thus, we shall have to work hard to win the Cup. I am not under any pressure because I have won the trophy as a player and have also reached several finals as a coach, especially in Somalia," Mbalangu stated.
Rewards and Stakes
The stakes are high for this year's finalists. The winner of the Stanbic Uganda Cup will receive a cash prize of USH 50 million, while the runners-up will take home USH 25 million. Additionally, each finalist is guaranteed to receive 10 Zakayo balls, providing valuable resources for future training and development.
Beyond the financial incentives, the victorious team will earn the honor of representing Uganda in the prestigious CAF Confederation Cup next season, a significant opportunity to compete on the continental stage.
The Stage is Set
As the final approaches, both NEC FC and Kitara FC are preparing to leave everything on the field in their quest for glory. The match promises to be a captivating display of skill, strategy, and determination, with both teams vying to etch their names in Ugandan football history.
