On July 5, 2024, a significant milestone in Uganda’s infrastructure development was marked by the official handover of the repair works of Karuma Bridge. This crucial bridge, located on the Kampala-Gulu highway in Kiryandongo District, has been under scrutiny due to safety concerns. Hon. Francis Ecweru, the Minister of State for Works and Transport, led the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of the bridge to the region’s transportation network.
*Addressing Safety Concerns*
Hon. Ecweru explained that the decision to close Karuma Bridge was made after the structure developed cracks, posing a severe risk of collapse. The safety of commuters and the integrity of the transportation network necessitated immediate action. The Minister expressed his gratitude to President Yoweri Museveni for his prompt directive to the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development to expedite the funding necessary for the bridge's repairs.
*Handover to Reputable Contractors*
The responsibility of repairing the bridge has been entrusted to a consortium comprising China Railway 7th Group and National Enterprise Corporation (NEC). This handover symbolizes a collaboration aimed at not only restoring the bridge but also enhancing the capacity of local enterprises.
Hon. Ecweru acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the bridge’s closure and urged the public to remain patient as the repair works commence. He assured that the contractors are committed to restoring the bridge to a safe and operational state in the near future.
*Future Plans for Karuma Bridge*
In addition to the immediate repairs, Hon. Ecweru announced ambitious plans for constructing a new, iconic bridge at Karuma. The designs and procurement processes for this project are already underway, indicating the government’s commitment to long-term infrastructure development and resilience.
*NEC’s Commitment to Quality*
Eng. Brian Buhanda, the General Manager of NEC Works, represented the consortium during the handover ceremony. Eng. Buhanda expressed his gratitude to the Ugandan Government for the opportunity to undertake such a significant project. He highlighted the importance of this project in building the capacity of NEC and enhancing its reputation in the construction industry.
Eng. Buhanda pledged to execute the repair works with the highest standards of quality within the three-month timeframe stipulated in the contract. He underscored NEC’s dedication to delivering infrastructure that meets safety and durability standards, ensuring that the Karuma Bridge will serve the public reliably for years to come.
The official handover of the Karuma Bridge repair works marks a critical step in ensuring the safety and efficiency of Uganda’s transportation network. With the collaborative efforts of China Railway 7th Group and NEC, under the vigilant oversight of the Ministry of Works and Transport, the public can look forward to the timely restoration and eventual enhancement of this vital infrastructure.
