ONC Bugisu Team Uncovers Serious Issues at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital
By John Kusolo
Mbale, Uganda – The ONC Bugisu Team, led by Chris Buyera and accompanied by Jalia Namasaba, Shaban Kachimete, and Wandulu Zaidi, embarked on a three-day fact-finding mission to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital. Their investigation has revealed several pressing concerns that demand immediate attention.
Defiance of Presidential Directive
One of the most alarming discoveries is the blatant disregard of a presidential directive by the Mbale City Authorities. This directive mandates the relocation of pharmacies and private health facilities away from hospitals to prevent conflicts of interest and ensure patient safety. However, the ONC Bugisu Team found that over ten pharmacies and private health facilities, allegedly owned by doctors working at the regional referral hospital, are operating in close proximity to the hospital.
These facilities are reportedly involved in unethical practices where medical workers refer patients to these private entities in exchange for commissions. This not only compromises the integrity of medical services but also places an undue financial burden on patients.
Hospital Perimeter Chaos
The hospital's main gate is another area of concern. It is congested with special hire vehicles and Boda Bodas (motorcycle taxis), creating a chaotic and potentially dangerous environment. The team has recommended that Mbale City Council Authorities take immediate action to organize this area to ensure smooth and safe access for patients and hospital staff.
Security Lapses
Insecurity at the hospital is a significant issue. With fewer than five officers assigned to hospital security, the facility is ill-equipped to handle potential threats or emergencies. The lack of adequate security personnel not only jeopardizes the safety of patients and staff but also undermines the hospital’s ability to function efficiently.
Critical Blood Shortage
Perhaps the most distressing finding is the hospital's insufficient blood supply. Zemei Sylvia, the in-charge of the Acute Care Unit, reported that the hospital loses over 30 children every month due to a lack of blood. Just last Thursday, four children tragically died because of this shortage. This critical issue underscores the urgent need for an effective and reliable blood donation system to be established in the region.
Recommendations
The ONC Bugisu Team has called for immediate intervention from the relevant authorities to address these issues. Key recommendations include:
Strict Enforcement of Health Facility Regulations: Relocate pharmacies and private health facilities away from the hospital as per the presidential directive.
Organize Hospital Perimeter: Regulate the special hire and Boda Boda operations around the hospital to ensure safe and unobstructed access.
Enhance Security Measures: Increase the number of security personnel at the hospital to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
Improve Blood Supply: Implement a robust blood donation and supply system to prevent further loss of lives due to blood shortages.
The findings of the ONC Bugisu Team highlight critical areas that require urgent attention to improve healthcare delivery at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital. Addressing these issues will be essential in ensuring the safety, health, and well-being of the community.
