In a groundbreaking move to bolster Uganda's cultural and religious tourism, the Interreligious Council of Uganda (IRCU) has appointed Owek. Amb. Al-Haj Prof. Badru Kateregga as a Co-Vice Chairperson of the newly established Interreligious Tourism Centre Committee. The appointment was announced by the Council of Presidents of the IRCU, reflecting a strategic effort to leverage Uganda’s rich religious and cultural diversity for national development.

Prof. Kateregga, a distinguished academic, diplomat, and visionary leader, is renowned for his role as the founding Vice-Chancellor of Kampala University and Chairman of the BDK Universities Network International. With decades of experience in education, diplomacy, and interreligious dialogue, his expertise will be pivotal in advancing the committee’s goals.

A Mission to Promote Religious and Cultural Tourism

The Interreligious Tourism Centre Committee was formed to position Uganda’s religious and cultural heritage as a cornerstone of its tourism industry. The committee will provide strategic advice and guidance to the Centre, review its activities, budgets, plans, and programs, and recommend actionable steps to the IRCU secretariat, Executive Board, and Council of Presidents.

Key among its objectives is creating a platform that showcases Uganda’s religious harmony while fostering peace and unity across diverse faith groups. Through these efforts, the committee aims to attract both domestic and international visitors, thereby enhancing tourism revenue and fostering interfaith understanding.

Prof. Kateregga’s Vision for the Committee

Speaking about his appointment, Prof. Kateregga expressed his gratitude and commitment to the task ahead.

"I am deeply honoured to be entrusted with this responsibility. I look forward to working with my colleagues to develop the Interreligious Tourism Centre as a beacon of religious harmony and a significant contributor to Uganda’s tourism industry. This initiative will showcase Uganda as a nation of peace and unity amidst diversity," he stated.

Prof. Kateregga’s dedication to promoting interreligious dialogue and cultural exchange aligns seamlessly with the goals of the committee. His leadership is expected to foster innovative approaches to interfaith tourism and encourage international collaborations that position Uganda as a global leader in this niche tourism sector.

Enhancing Unity Through Tourism

The IRCU, through this initiative, aims to create a unique blend of tourism that celebrates Uganda’s religious heritage while promoting peaceful coexistence. The Centre will serve as a hub for visitors to explore Uganda’s diverse faiths, traditions, and cultural sites.

By integrating interfaith dialogue with tourism, the Centre is expected to create opportunities for economic growth, enhance Uganda’s global image, and inspire other nations to adopt similar models of cultural and religious tourism.

Impact Beyond Borders

The committee’s work is anticipated to open new avenues for international partnerships, showcasing Uganda’s potential as a destination for cultural and spiritual enrichment. Beyond tourism, the initiative is expected to contribute significantly to social cohesion and interfaith harmony, both within Uganda and across borders.

A Leadership Rooted in Excellence

Prof. Kateregga’s appointment underscores the IRCU’s commitment to excellence and inclusivity in driving national development. As an accomplished scholar and leader, his vast knowledge and experience will be instrumental in guiding the committee’s activities and ensuring the realization of its ambitious vision.

The Interreligious Tourism Centre Committee, under Prof. Kateregga’s stewardship, promises to be a transformative initiative for Uganda, fostering unity, celebrating diversity, and driving socio-economic progress through the lens of interfaith and cultural tourism.

This development marks a significant step forward in Uganda’s journey to becoming a global hub for religious and cultural tourism, demonstrating the power of heritage and diversity in uniting people and driving national development.
