In a significant move that underscores the dynamism within Uganda’s political landscape, youth leaders from various parts of the country and different spheres of society, under the banner of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), have called for the retirement of General Muhoozi Kainerugaba from his position as Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), UPDF. This call is part of a broader strategy to position him as a presidential candidate for the 2026 General Elections.
The youth leaders, led by Counsel Pascal Nantamba, Chief Mobilizer of PLU Youth, were joined by Denis Maloba, former Secretary General of MK Army and team leader of PLU Research, Policy, and Development Network; Victor Abarisigara, Chairman of the Umbrella of Universities PLU; and Patience Ssempala. Together, they addressed the press, articulating a vision for new leadership and innovative solutions to Uganda's current and future challenges.
The Case for Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s Candidacy
Counsel Pascal Nantamba emphasized the need for generational leadership transition, arguing that General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, despite his achievements, should pave the way for younger leaders. "Naturally, the grandfather, General Museveni, should pave way for the CDF to take on the mantle. He is still young and energetic to maintain the success and gains of the NRM government," Pascal stated, capturing the enthusiasm of the youth present.
The call for General Muhoozi's retirement from the army is also rooted in Uganda’s constitutional stipulations, which prohibit active army officers from engaging in politics. By retiring, General Muhoozi would be able to participate in the political arena and potentially lead the nation.
Celebrating Museveni’s Achievements
The youth leaders did not hold back in their praise for President Museveni, acknowledging his transformative leadership since he took power in 1986. Pascal thanked President Museveni for turning Uganda from a failed state to a functional one and from a low-based material economy to an essential manufacturing economy. Museveni’s efforts in building a pro-people national army were also highlighted, with Pascal noting the significant improvement in the relationship between civilians and soldiers.
Forwarding the Proposal
The proposal was formally received by Hon. Daudi Kabanda, Secretary General of PLU, who assured the youth leaders that their request would be forwarded to the PLU Central Executive Committee (CEC). The PLU Secretariat's reception of this proposal marks an important step in the political process and highlights the organizational support behind this push for new leadership.
A New Chapter for Uganda?
The advocacy for General Muhoozi’s candidacy represents a broader desire among the youth for fresh ideas and approaches to governance. As the 2026 General Elections approach, the PLU Youth’s call for leadership transition could resonate with a significant portion of the electorate, particularly the younger demographic seeking change.
The Patriotic League of Uganda Youth’s appeal to President Museveni to retire General Muhoozi Kainerugaba sets the stage for a potentially transformative period in Ugandan politics. The youth’s emphasis on new solutions to new problems highlights the evolving political landscape and the critical role that younger generations are poised to play in shaping the future of the nation.
