President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda officially commissioned the newly constructed Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya County, Kenya, on 2nd January 2025. The event, graced by high-ranking dignitaries, including Kenyan President Dr. William Ruto and Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, was marked by cultural celebrations, speeches, and a thrilling football match between Kenya’s Gor Mahia Football Club and Uganda’s Kitara Football Club.

The stadium, named after Kenya’s first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, is a modern facility that reflects the growing commitment of the East African region to promote sports as a driver of unity, youth empowerment, and economic development. Its completion is a testament to Kenya’s dedication to enhancing sports infrastructure to meet international standards.
The highlight of the day was an electrifying football match between Gor Mahia and Kitara FC.

The game ended in a dramatic 9-8 penalty shootout victory for the hosts after a competitive and entertaining encounter.

The spirited match showcased the talent and sportsmanship of players from both nations, thrilling the spectators and solidifying football’s role in fostering regional ties.

In his speech, President Museveni emphasized the importance of sports in promoting discipline, teamwork, and international cooperation among the youth. However, he reminded them that while sports are vital, the key to sustainable wealth creation lies in engaging in productive economic activities.
He reiterated the four sectors of wealth creation—commercial agriculture, industrialization, services, and information and communication technology (ICT)—as the pathways out of poverty. “Football is a good game, but I urge young people to focus on transforming their lives through productive activities. Wealth creation is the backbone of societal development,” President Museveni remarked.

President Museveni’s presence at the event highlighted the strong bilateral relationship between Uganda and Kenya. He expressed gratitude to President Ruto and Rt. Hon. Odinga for inviting him and emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in fostering development and unity.
“Kenya and Uganda share a deep history and a bright future. Together, we can achieve great milestones in economic growth, cultural exchange, and social development. This stadium is a symbol of our shared aspirations,” President Museveni stated.
The commissioning of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium is a significant milestone for Siaya County. The facility is expected to boost local sports, attract national and international events, and stimulate economic growth through increased tourism and business opportunities.
Kenyan President William Ruto lauded the project, describing it as a cornerstone of Siaya County’s development. Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga also emphasized the role of sports in uniting communities and providing opportunities for young people.
The commissioning of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium stands as a symbol of regional collaboration and the shared vision of East African leaders to uplift their communities. As Uganda and Kenya continue to strengthen their ties, such initiatives underscore the potential of sports to drive economic and social transformation.
