Juba, South Sudan — President Salva Kiir Mayardit has called on the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) and other organized forces to uphold the highest standards of discipline and professionalism, warning them to steer clear of activities that tarnish the image of the military institution. Addressing senior officers, President Kiir emphasized the need for the military to avoid engaging in politics and other vices, such as land grabbing, which could weaken their role as protectors of the nation’s territorial integrity.

“We warn SSPDF and other regular forces against involvement in politics, but rather to concentrate on their transformation process into conventional institutions,” President Kiir stated. “We will not allow anybody in uniforms to engage in politics because you have a different role to play in the country. To members of the military and other organized forces, from today onward, you must refrain from engaging in dirty politics."

President Kiir underscored that the government is committed to ensuring the transformation of the SSPDF into a conventional and professional institution capable of safeguarding South Sudan’s sovereignty. He warned that indulging in partisan politics or illegal activities undermines the institution's credibility and derails its mandate.

The President’s remarks come amidst ongoing efforts to professionalize the SSPDF as part of South Sudan’s broader peace and security reforms under the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

President Kiir also directed the SSPDF to take a leading role in clearing illegal checkpoints along major highways. This move aims to facilitate the free movement of goods and services across the country, addressing one of the major challenges hindering economic growth and development in South Sudan.

"The SSPDF should be leading the operations in the clearance of illegal checkpoints along the major highways to ensure free passage of goods and services to the people across the country," President Kiir said.

Illegal checkpoints have been a persistent issue in South Sudan, often leading to extortion, delays, and insecurity. The President’s directive highlights the government’s resolve to restore order and ensure the protection of civilians and businesses.

The newly appointed Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Dr. Paul Nang Majok, pledged to implement the President’s directives and drive the reforms necessary for the professionalization of the SSPDF. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Majok expressed his commitment to addressing the challenges facing the military and ensuring its transformation into a disciplined and effective force.

“I assure the President and the people of South Sudan that we will work diligently to implement the government’s directives and restore the image of the SSPDF as a professional and respected institution,” Dr. Majok said.

President Kiir’s warning against political involvement and unethical practices comes at a critical time when South Sudan is navigating its post-conflict recovery. The military has a crucial role to play in maintaining peace and stability, particularly as the country prepares for elections and continues its peacebuilding efforts.

The emphasis on clearing illegal checkpoints also aligns with the government’s vision to enhance economic activities by improving security along trade routes. This is expected to boost business confidence and ensure that essential goods reach the most vulnerable communities across the country.

As South Sudan moves forward with its nation-building efforts, the call for military discipline and professionalism is a reminder of the critical role the SSPDF plays in the country’s stability. By adhering to the directives of President Salva Kiir, the military can rebuild its reputation and contribute to the development and unity of South Sudan.

The leadership of Dr. Paul Nang Majok as the new CDF marks a new chapter for the SSPDF, one that promises accountability, reform, and a renewed commitment to serving the people of South Sudan.
