StarTimes Uganda Premier League: KCCA FC vs NEC FC

*By John Kusolo*

*Match Preview* : A Battle for Supremacy

Top-of-the-table KCCA FC hosts third-placed NEC FC in what promises to be a pulsating Matchday 9 encounter in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League (UPL). This fixture at the MTN Omondi Stadium is set to define the season's early momentum as both teams vie for supremacy under the floodlights.

KCCA FC comes into the game with 18 points from eight matches, holding the only unbeaten record in the league. Meanwhile, NEC FC sits just two points behind in third, boasting 16 points from their eight outings. The stakes are sky-high as a victory for NEC would propel them to the summit, while KCCA will look to extend their lead and maintain their dominance.

*Team Form and Statistics*

*KCCA FC*

The hosts are having a stellar season, with their defense being the cornerstone of their success. The Cityzens have conceded only two goals in eight games, both on the road against BUL FC and Vipers SC. At home, they remain impenetrable, keeping four consecutive clean sheets.

Offensively, KCCA FC has scored 12 goals this season, averaging 1.5 goals per game. However, their scoring has lacked consistency, with most of their goals coming in two standout performances – a 2-0 victory against Kitara FC and a 5-0 thrashing of Maroons.

In their previous league encounter, KCCA FC shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Vipers SC, a result that underscored their defensive resilience but highlighted a need for sharper finishing in critical games.

*NEC FC*

NEC FC, affectionately known as the Diehards, has shown remarkable progress in their sophomore UPL campaign. Their season started with a bang, defeating Vipers SC 3-1 in the opener at this very venue. They have since amassed five wins, one draw, and two losses.

NEC’s attack has been their standout feature, scoring in six of their eight matches and averaging 1.38 goals per game. However, their defense has shown vulnerability, conceding six goals so far, four of which came in away matches.

In their last outing, NEC FC played out a goalless draw with Police FC, a result they will look to improve upon against their formidable rivals, KCCA.

*Head-to-Head Record*

The rivalry between KCCA FC and NEC FC is evenly poised, with both teams winning one game each in their two previous league meetings last season. NEC claimed a 2-0 victory in the first leg, while KCCA FC responded with a commanding 3-0 win in the return fixture. Interestingly, both matches were held at the MTN Omondi Stadium.

**Team News*

*KCCA FC**

The Cityzens will be without goalkeeper Mutwalibi Mugolofa, who is suspended due to accumulated yellow cards. Anthony Emojong is expected to step in as his replacement.

Key forward Derrick Nsibambi and captain Julius Poloto remain sidelined with hamstring injuries, while Peter Magambo and Joao Gabriel continue their rehabilitation for foot and ankle injuries, respectively.

However, the return of forward Emmanuel Anyama, who has resumed full training, will boost their attacking options. Uganda Cranes players Gavin Kizito, Saidi Mayanja, and Shafik Kwikiriza are expected to feature after returning from international duty.

Available Squad: Emojong, Lukyamuzi, Mujuzi, Obenchan, Mubiru, Lukwago, Gavin, Muhamud, Juma, Mubezi, Sserunjogi, Ijara, Munguchi, Saidi, Mugume, Anukani, Ssebaduka, Usama, Katenga, Ssengendo, Kwikiriza, Abu, and Anaku.

*NEC FC*

NEC approaches this game with confidence, knowing that a win could see them take the top spot. Head coach Hussein Mbalangu will look to capitalize on their potent attack while addressing defensive lapses that have plagued their away performances.

*Coaches’ Remarks*

Abdallah Mubiru (KCCA FC Head Coach):

"We’ve prepared well for this game. It will be competitive since NEC is familiar with this venue. We trust our squad despite a few injuries and suspensions. This is an opportunity to solidify our position at the top."

Hussein Mbalangu (NEC FC Head Coach):

"We are ready for this challenge. This game is crucial for us, and our players are focused on delivering a result that could see us move to the top of the table."

Usama Arafat (KCCA FC): The playmaker has been instrumental in KCCA’s midfield, dictating play and creating scoring opportunities.

Katenga (KCCA FC): A reliable goal-scorer, Katenga’s ability to find the back of the net will be critical.

Cromwel Rwothomio (NEC FC): The forward has been a consistent threat for NEC, and his performance could be decisive.

This highly anticipated clash is not just about three points—it’s about dominance, pride, and setting the tone for the title race. KCCA’s impeccable home record and defensive solidity will be tested by NEC’s attacking flair and hunger for glory.

Tickets are priced at UGX 10,000 (Regular) and UGX 50,000 (VIP). Fans are encouraged to arrive early to avoid missing any of the action.
