As Match Day 6 of the Startimes Uganda Premier League (UPL) approaches, football enthusiasts are eager for an exciting encounter this Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo. Express FC, currently 5th on the table with 8 points after five matches, will face Lugazi FC, who sit at the bottom in 16th place, with just 2 points to their name. The 7 pm kickoff promises an electrifying atmosphere as Express FC aims to climb to 3rd place in the standings, while Lugazi FC seeks to secure their first win of the season.
However, what makes this clash even more notable is the historical significance it carries. Lugazi FC will be led by newly appointed head coach, Oliver Mbekeka, who becomes the first female head coach in the history of the Uganda Premier League. Mbekeka, a former coach of the Crested Cranes and Lady Doves, steps into this role following the departure of Sadick Sempigi, who was relieved of his duties after a disappointing start to the season.
Lugazi FC's decision to appoint Mbekeka marks a significant milestone in Ugandan football. The club made the announcement earlier today, expressing its gratitude to outgoing coach Sempigi for his service but emphasizing their confidence in Mbekeka’s leadership to guide the club forward.
“We would like to express our gratitude to Sempigi for his tireless efforts and services during his time with us, and we wish him all the best in his future coaching endeavors,” the club stated.
Mbekeka's appointment is a groundbreaking moment, not only for Lugazi FC but for Ugandan football as a whole. The club’s chairman, Hajji Abdul Kawuulu, voiced his confidence in her abilities, stating:
“Her appointment is very important for the club. We believe she will significantly enhance the team’s performance in the league.”
Lugazi FC’s season has been challenging, with the team managing only two points from five matches, including draws against Vipers and newly promoted Mbale Heroes, but suffering losses to Maroons, UPDF, and Kitara FC. Sempigi's exit followed reports of difficulties in integrating key signings key signings such as Fahad Jumbe, Akram Mbasa, and Bashamu Mugwa
into a cohesive unit.
Mbekeka, who joined Lugazi FC as an assistant coach in July, now steps into the top role at a time when the club desperately needs to turn its fortunes around. Despite the team’s position at the bottom of the table, her experience with youth and women’s football, including guiding the Crested Cranes U-20 and Lady Doves, makes her well-equipped to handle the pressures of top-flight football.
Her first challenge will be against an in-form Express FC, whose head coach, Mbowa Abubaker, has urged his team to remain focused and not underestimate Lugazi, despite their struggles.
“Lugazi are looking for their first win, and we must not take them lightly. We need to secure maximum points at home,” Mbowa said ahead of the match.
Express FC, with two wins, two draws, and one loss, have scored six goals while conceding seven, a record that places them in 5th position. A victory on Tuesday will propel them to 3rd place, providing added motivation for Mbowa and his squad to make the most of their home advantage.
Led by standout players, Express FC will look to capitalize on Lugazi’s vulnerabilities while maintaining a strong defensive stance. With their sights set on climbing higher in the standings, Express will be a formidable opponent for Mbekeka in her debut as head coach.
For Mbekeka, this match represents the beginning of a crucial period as she attempts to steer Lugazi FC to safety. Beyond the Express FC fixture, she will face further challenges with upcoming matches against NEC on October 30 and a home clash against Wakiso Giants on November 6. Her ability to motivate and tactically shape her team will be under intense scrutiny, but her appointment brings hope that Lugazi FC can find new direction under her leadership.
The matchup between Express FC and Lugazi FC on October 22 will not only be a battle for crucial points but also a moment of history as Oliver Mbekeka steps into her role as the first female head coach in the Uganda Premier League. As she leads her team onto the pitch at Hamz Stadium, she carries the hopes of Lugazi FC and the aspirations of many who see her appointment as a breakthrough for women in Ugandan football. With determination and tactical prowess, Mbekeka has the opportunity to guide Lugazi to success and pave the way for future female coaches in the UPL.
All eyes will be on this historic encounter as the Startimes Uganda Premier League welcomes a new chapter in its long and vibrant history.
