In the quiet heartlands of Uganda, a once mighty lion has taken his rest. Rev. Fr. Damien Grimes, MHM, MBE, a revered figure whose name echoes through institutions such as Namasagali College, Namilyango, Makerere University, Nkumba, and beyond, has bid farewell to this world. His departure is not just a loss to the Catholic Church and educational sector but also to the countless lives he touched.
*The Roar of a Giant*
Fr. Damien Grimes was more than just a priest and educator; he was a father to many, a beacon of hope, and a guardian of knowledge. His roar, though gentle, reverberated through the corridors of academia, the hearts of students, and the soul of Uganda. He was a man who transcended roles, seeing beyond titles and positions to address the deepest needs of those under his guidance.
His work was never confined to the pulpit or classroom alone. In every lecture he delivered and every homily he preached, Fr. Grimes imparted not only knowledge but also wisdom, kindness, and understanding. He helped shape generations of Ugandans, instilling in them the values of discipline, self-respect, and compassion. His mission was not merely academic excellence but the development of well-rounded individuals capable of leading lives with purpose.
*A Legacy Forged in Education*
Perhaps it was in the classrooms, halls, and fields of Uganda’s prestigious schools where Fr. Grimes left his most indelible mark. At Namasagali College, where his leadership was synonymous with intellectual and artistic awakening, his influence continues to be felt. Under his stewardship, the school became a place where academic achievement and creative expression thrived side by side. His legacy at Namasagali is not simply one of a headmaster but of a visionary who believed in nurturing the whole individual—mind, body, and spirit.
Institutions such as Namilyango, Makerere, and Nkumba were also touched by his drive for academic integrity and moral fortitude. Students who passed through his hands are today leaders in various fields, not only within Uganda but across the world. They bear witness to the profound impact of his life’s work, living testaments to a man whose passion for education knew no bounds.
*A Life of Service to Humanity*
Fr. Grimes' life was one of selfless service. He understood that leadership is not just about wielding authority but about serving others. He devoted himself to uplifting the marginalized, advocating for the rights of all, and ensuring that the underprivileged had access to quality education. Whether through scholarships or personal mentorship, he found ways to break down barriers and create opportunities.
His efforts did not go unnoticed. The recognition of his lifetime of service was enshrined in the honorific title of MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire). It was not merely an award but a symbol of the global appreciation for his tireless dedication to humanity. However, for Fr. Grimes, the greatest reward was never the accolades but the success stories of those whose lives he helped shape.
*The Final Rest*
Today, Uganda mourns the passing of a giant, but as we grieve, we also celebrate the life of a man whose spirit remains with us. The halls he once walked, the classrooms where he taught, and the communities he uplifted will forever be reminders of his enduring legacy. His journey has come full circle, but his influence will continue to rise with the sun each day, a testament to the lives he changed.
His teachings and values will live on in every heart that beat in rhythm with his mission. His call to integrity, kindness, and the pursuit of knowledge will continue to inspire generations. As he rests now, his spirit roams free—carried in the whispers of the wind, the laughter of children, and the success of those he touched.
Rest in peace, Rev. Fr. Damien Grimes MHM, MBE. Your battle is won. You leave behind a Uganda forever shaped by your roar.
