Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon 2024: A Global Sporting Event with a Commitment to Sustainability

By John Kusolo

The Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon is gearing up for its third edition on August 24, 2024, in Kasese, Uganda. This year’s marathon, building on the success of its previous editions, is set to further enhance its reputation as a unique and internationally recognized event. With participants from 30 countries expected to compete, the marathon continues to grow both in scale and prestige.

A Marathon Like No Other

The Rwenzori Marathon is not just another race; it is the only marathon in the world that starts and crosses the equator. Participants will embark on a challenging yet breathtaking route that runs through the iconic Queen Elizabeth National Park, renowned for its rich biodiversity. The scenic course offers stunning views of Lake George and the majestic Rwenzori mountain range, home to five of Africa’s ten highest peaks. These natural wonders, coupled with the thrill of crossing the equator, make the Rwenzori Marathon a truly extraordinary experience.

Rapid Growth and International Presence

Amos Wekesa, one of the key organizers, highlighted the marathon’s impressive growth trajectory. "This year, we expect participants from 30 countries, making it a truly global event," Wekesa stated. The marathon’s first edition saw 800 runners from four countries, while last year’s event attracted 2,200 participants from 17 countries. This exponential growth underscores the marathon’s increasing popularity and its appeal to runners from around the world.

Coca-Cola Beverages Uganda: Keeping Runners Refreshed

This year’s marathon has also garnered significant corporate support, with Coca-Cola Beverages Uganda continuing its partnership for the 2024 edition. The beverage giant is ensuring that every runner stays hydrated and refreshed with Rwenzori Pure Natural Mineral Water. Coca-Cola’s sponsorship, valued at UGX 173 million, reflects the company’s commitment to supporting local events and promoting healthy lifestyles. "We’re proud to support this iconic race in the heart of the Rwenzori region," a Coca-Cola representative noted, emphasizing the company’s role in enhancing the marathon experience for all participants.

Toyota’s Commitment to Sustainability

Another notable sponsor is Toyota, which has partnered with the Rwenzori Marathon for the second consecutive year. Toyota by CFAO is once again the official mobility partner, providing two hybrid electric cars—the Corolla Hybrid Electric and the RAV4 Hybrid Electric—as lead vehicles for the 42 km and 21 km races. These hybrid vehicles, which combine gasoline and electric power, significantly reduce emissions, aligning with the marathon’s environmental goals. "This year, they are proud to provide two lead cars for the races," stated Isaac Tegule, emphasizing Toyota’s dedication to sustainability and innovation.

In addition to promoting hybrid technology, Toyota aims to use the marathon as a platform for fostering talent development and educating the public about the benefits of hybrid vehicles.

Environmental Stewardship and the "Leave No Trace" Principle

The Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon is not only about athletic achievement but also about environmental responsibility. The organizers have made it clear that maintaining a clean and sustainable environment is a top priority. Participants are encouraged to dispose of trash responsibly, avoid littering, and refrain from blocking drainage systems. The marathon’s commitment to the "Leave No Trace" principle ensures that both the route and venue are left "better than we found it," reflecting a deep respect for the natural surroundings.

Event Details and Registration

The marathon offers several race categories: the full marathon (42 km), the half marathon (21 km), a 10 km race, and a 5 km Family Fun Run. The 42 km race will start on the Equator on the Kasese-Mbarara highway, with buses provided to transport runners from the arena to the start point. The 21 km and 10 km races will start from Rwenzori Street, while the 5 km race will begin on Margherita Street.

The registration fee is UGX 60,000 for East African Community (EAC) citizens and residents, and USD 60 for international participants. Kit pick-up locations include Station Xpress in Kampala from August 14 to 22, and at the arena on Stanley Street in Kasese on August 22 and 23. Additional kit distribution will take place during the Gutsy Saturday Run at Marco's Gym in Naalya on August 17.

A Word from Amos Wekesa

As the marathon continues to grow in both size and reputation, Amos Wekesa remains optimistic about its future. "The Rwenzori Marathon has evolved into a global event that not only showcases Uganda’s natural beauty but also promotes a culture of environmental stewardship and healthy living," he remarked. Wekesa’s vision for the marathon is one that balances athletic excellence with a commitment to sustainability and community development.

With its unique features, international appeal, and strong focus on environmental responsibility, the Tusker Mt. Rwenzori Marathon 2024 is set to be an unforgettable event. As participants from around the world prepare to take on the challenge, the marathon promises to be a celebration of both human endurance and the natural wonders of Uganda.
