The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has taken a significant step in preparing for the upcoming National ID mass enrolment and mass renewal exercise by launching hands-on training for its staff. This training marks a crucial phase in NIRA's efforts to streamline and enhance the efficiency of the nationwide exercise, which is expected to address the growing demand for national identification services.
The hands-on training commenced today and is being conducted simultaneously in two different locations to ensure wide coverage and effective knowledge transfer. The program is designed to run for two weeks, with participants divided into batches. This phased approach allows for in-depth training of staff on the proper use of the recently acquired enrolment kits and other critical operational procedures necessary for the success of the exercise.
In a bid to bolster its operational capacity, NIRA recently received 1,000 new enrolment kits. These kits are state-of-the-art equipment designed to facilitate the mass enrolment and renewal process, enabling the authority to scale up its preparations significantly. The additional resources will help NIRA address previous challenges related to the availability of functional equipment, particularly in remote and underserved areas.
The mass enrolment and renewal exercise aims to:
Register all eligible Ugandans, including those who missed previous enrolments.
Renew expired National Identity Cards to ensure continuity of service.
Update and maintain accurate demographic data in the national identification database.
This initiative is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting government programs and enhancing service delivery in areas such as financial inclusion, healthcare, education, and national security.
The training exercise has been spearheaded by NIRA's top leadership, who have emphasized the importance of equipping staff with the skills needed to handle the large-scale operation effectively. Stakeholders from government institutions, development partners, and local authorities have also pledged their support for the initiative, recognizing its importance in fostering national development.
The upcoming enrolment exercise will be conducted across the country, with NIRA deploying mobile registration units to reach even the most remote areas. The authority is also working closely with local leaders and community representatives to create awareness and ensure maximum participation.
As NIRA continues its preparations, Ugandans are urged to get ready for the exercise by ensuring they have the necessary documents required for registration or renewal. The authority has also encouraged citizens to cooperate with registration officers to make the process seamless.
