Uganda Civil Aviation Authority Launches Safety Week to Strengthen Aviation Standards

Fred Bamwesigye, the Director General of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), launched Safety Week activities today, marking the beginning of a dedicated period focused on bolstering aviation safety. Taking place from November 11th to 15th, the initiative brings together a wide array of stakeholders—including airport operators, airlines, and service providers—to assess Uganda's safety performance, share best practices, and reaffirm their commitment to safety standards that support the development of the aviation sector.

Uganda’s aviation safety record remains a point of pride for the country. Last year, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) awarded Uganda an impressive 72.2% in its safety audit, underscoring the country’s efforts in meeting global safety standards. The ICAO safety audit is a rigorous process that evaluates a country's adherence to aviation safety protocols and regulatory practices. Uganda’s high score highlights a consistent dedication to improvement, as well as a strong infrastructure that supports the growth and security of aviation in the region.

"Uganda holds a strong safety record, and our achievements in recent years reflect our unwavering commitment to ensuring that safety remains a top priority,” said Bamwesigye during his opening remarks.

Safety Week at Entebbe International Airport provides a structured platform for engaging key stakeholders across the aviation sector. Bamwesigye emphasized the event’s value as a chance to collectively reflect on the milestones reached in aviation safety, such as advancements in operational protocols, adherence to safety regulations, and improvement in emergency response strategies. These achievements, he said, are central to supporting the aviation industry's growth and the country's connectivity.

The week will include a variety of activities aimed at strengthening safety standards. Stakeholders will engage in workshops, training sessions, and discussion forums that cover key topics such as risk management, incident prevention, and emergency preparedness. These activities aim to foster a shared understanding among all parties involved in ensuring safety at the airport.

“Safety is a shared responsibility between the airport operators, airlines, and all service providers,” Bamwesigye said. “By constructively challenging each other and sharing best practices, we can continue to uphold a safe environment for everyone who works in or passes through Entebbe International Airport.”

Bamwesigye highlighted the importance of collaborative participation from all stakeholders. He called on participants to not only take an active role in the activities but also to challenge each other constructively, suggesting that a culture of accountability and transparency is key to strengthening safety standards. This inclusive approach reflects UCAA’s commitment to making safety a core pillar across all operations, from passenger services to cargo handling and ground operations.

The Director General stressed that each stakeholder—whether involved in ground handling, flight operations, or regulatory enforcement—has a crucial role to play in aviation safety. By working together, stakeholders can mitigate potential risks and improve operational resilience. The emphasis on teamwork and shared responsibility is part of a broader strategy to ensure that the aviation industry in Uganda continues to grow sustainably and safely.

Uganda's dedication to maintaining and enhancing aviation safety comes at a time when the country’s aviation sector is experiencing significant growth. With plans to expand infrastructure and increase traffic at Entebbe International Airport, maintaining high safety standards is essential. Bamwesigye reiterated that as the industry evolves, so too must the approach to safety, incorporating new technologies, practices, and regulations.
